What Are Dried Figs?
Dried figs are the fruit of the ficus tree, which is part of the mulberry family and native to the Middle East and Mediterranean.
They have a unique, sweet taste, soft and chewy texture and are littered with slightly crunchy, edible seeds.
Fresh figs are delicate and perishable, so are often dried to preserve them. This produces a sweet and nutritious dried fruit that can be enjoyed all year round.
Their natural sweetness meant that, before the days of refined sugars, they were often used as a sweetener.
Cooking Dried Figs
Dried figs make an excellent addition to salads, or toppings on porridge, yoghurt or cereals.
They can be used as stuffing, included in dips, used as a pizza topping or as part of a kebab.
Figs also make great additions to baking – raw energy balls, cakes, granola etc… Just use in place of other dried fruits!
For a delicious olive and fig tapenade, mince 115g figs, ½ cup kalamata olives and ½ cup pimiento-stuff green olives. Add 1 tsp fresh minced rosemary, 1 tbsp balsamic vinegar, and 2 tbsp olive oil and blitz until it has the texture you would like. Then it’s ready to serve as a dip or spread over crostini or crackers.
