What Are Dried Figs?
Figs are the fruit of the ficus tree, which is part of the mulberry family and native to the Middle East and Mediterranean.
They have a unique, sweet taste, soft and chewy texture and are littered with slightly crunchy, edible seeds.
Fresh figs are delicate and perishable, so are often dried to preserve them. This produces a sweet and nutritious dried fruit that can be enjoyed all year round.
Their natural sweetness meant that, before the days of refined sugars, they were often used as a sweetener.
How To Cook Chopped Dried Figs
Dried figs make an excellent addition to salads, or toppings on porridge, yoghurt or cereals.
They can be used as stuffing, included in dips, used as a pizza topping or as part of a kebab. Figs also make great additions to baking – raw energy balls, cakes, granola etc… Just use in place of other dried fruits!
